FAQs
Therapy can be a new process for some and a return journey for others. There can also be a lot of questions that arise when you are deciding if this is the right support for you. Frequently asked questions that may help you decide are below. For additional questions or to set up a complimentary consultation to help you decide, please contact us directly.
What is therapy?
Therapy is not a quick fix. It is process in which a lot of effort is put into awareness, deciding on what change makes sense for you, and implementing plans to reach your goals. Life also continues to exist outside of the therapy room, making progress in therapy non-linear and sometimes difficult to ascertain when other things arise. Your therapist will help guide you and support you in managing these things and connecting to your own sense of self.
How do I choose a therapist?
It is important to find the right fit in the professional you choose to work with and support you on your therapy journey. A consultation will help determine if you want to move forward with an intake session. It will likely take a few sessions to develop a relationship and sense of safety. Knowing ahead of time what you want to accomplish in therapy and what you want to work on will help guide both you and your therapist.
Who should seek therapy?
Therapy is a personal choice and though therapy can benefit all ages and conditions, it is person-specific, meaning therapy may not be the right fit for every person. It is important to consider this choice carefully as well as any bias or stigma towards mental health services that may be impacting your decision-making ability. The modalities used and way in which a person engages best in therapy may differ from person to person and change over time.
How can therapy help me?
Therapy can provide many benefits inclusive of increased awareness and sense of self, acceptance and understanding, increased communication and conflict resolution skills, and an increased tolerance to distress and stressors. It may also address and resolve patterns of behavior that inhibit your progress toward goals, manage stress, grief, anxiety, and depression, approach problem solving and decision making, and learn what fosters thoughts, behaviors, and actions.
What is an intake session?
An intake session is the first session with a therapist in which you will review the informed consent document, ask any questions you may have, review the health history form that you complete prior to this session, and begin to establish a sense of the relationship. While meeting a new person in this way can be difficult, the pace is slow and set by you as the client in terms of how much you share. Intake sessions are scheduled for 60 minutes but may take an additional session to complete.
How long will therapy take?
Therapy is a process and journey which depends on many factors including the person engaging in therapy. You may have a mental health diagnosis that requires long term management or decide to engage in therapy for a short-term during adjustments. History, family, support systems, and current lifestyle all factor in to both the decision to seek therapy and the length of time in which one may benefit from therapy services. This may also change over the course of time that you are in therapy.
How often and how long are sessions?
Sessions typically are 55 minutes in length but can be scheduled to fit your needs ranging from 25 to 80 minutes and depending on needs. Please note, if using insurance, longer sessions typically are not covered and insurance my dictate the frequency and length of sessions based on your coverage. Most therapy is scheduled on a weekly basis, at least for the first few months to develop a trusting relationship and work on progress to sustain longer time in between sessions.
How much does therapy cost?
Therapy is an investment in your mental health. Neuro-Roots LLC currently takes some insurances through a third party called Alma and has cash rates. We can provide a superbill to you to submit to your insurance if you are out of network. Please note that it is your responsibility to inquire with your insurance about coverage. A small number of sliding scale options will be granted on a case-by-case basis to foster health equity in the community and must be approached prior to the first session.
How do I pay for therapy?
You may opt to use insurance, if in-network and using the Alma portal as the third-party administrator. You may request a super-bill, which is an itemized receipt of services provided, that can be submitted to your insurance by you to determine whether they may reimburse you for therapy services. You can also choose to use your FSA or HSA funds. Payment is due at the time of sessions and late cancellations, cancellations with less than 48-business hours’ notice, will be charged a fee of $90 that is not covered by insurance.
What about telehealth sessions?
You may choose to engage in telehealth or virtual sessions. Please note that telehealth sessions are not a fit for every person. You must be located in the state in which your therapist is licensed to proceed with telehealth at the time of your session. At each session, in compliance with state law, you will be required to provide your location and confirm your identity. It is important to consider privacy and level of comfort when choosing where you will be when engaging in telehealth.
