April is Autism Acceptance Month…that can be both a time of celebration and additional stressors as those who are either autistic or who support those who are autistic are critically aware of growth as well as continued stigma for those with autism. From the growth mindset, mental health in those with autism is becoming more holistic, inclusive, and aware…yay! At Neuro-Roots LLC we are foundationally based on the premise that taking a full approach where we see an individual as a whole with many components and focusing on person rather than the behavioral manifestation of symptomatology to get to the root of the issue is important. It is heartwarming to see some movement in this direction where others see the importance of recognizing the capabilities in others, their strengths, and skills rather than pathologizing a diagnosis or being deficit oriented…in other words, acceptance. You can read more about some recommended approaches and statistics here:
We know there is a large learning curve and lots of growth to come, with our last social media share of the week as the above graphic, highlighting the normalization of ableism towards autistic individuals in phrases that are used all too often. From our perspective…if you don’t know, you can’t change and once you do know, you can’t undo the knowledge that you’ve attained. Our hope is that throughout this month, we can share snippets of information, create greater acceptance, and normalize that different minds are just as capable and deserving of celebration because bottom line…they are.
